Our Story

Since 1956, Holcomb Tree Service has been Dallas' trusted partner for comprehensive tree care. We've watched Highland Park and the surrounding neighborhoods grow, and we've been there through it, protecting the mature trees that make our streets beautiful while helping homeowners build the outdoor spaces they want.

What started as a small, family-focused business has grown into Dallas' arborist-led tree service company. We're not just another removal crew. Common Pitfalls

  1. I.

    Topping

    Cutting a crown back to stubs to make it smaller. It does not make a tree safer: the wounds force weak, crowded regrowth that is held on by almost nothing, and the tree spends reserves it needed for the summer.

  2. II.

    Flush cuts

    A cut taken tight against the trunk takes the branch collar with it. That collar is the only tissue that can close the wound, so a flush cut trades a branch for a hole in the trunk.

  3. III.

    Lion-tailing

    Stripping the inner limbs and leaving a tuft at the end. The weight moves to the tip of a longer lever and the limb loses the growth that braced it, which is how sound limbs come down in a storm.

  4. IV.

    Mulch to the trunk

    Mulch heaped against the bark keeps wet what needs to be dry. Rot and rodents follow, and the pile hides girdling roots for the years they take to do their work.

Each of these pitfalls has the same cause. A certified arborist is not a luxury appended to tree work; the arborist is the difference between tree work and tree care. Where a crew sees a limb to be removed, the arborist reads the crown for structure, the bark for stress, and the soil for what the Dallas heat has taken out of it. This is why our recommendations sometimes conclude that nothing should be done at all, advice that costs us work and earns us clients. The health services we keep on staff¹ exist so that removal remains what it ought to be: the last resort of a long acquaintance, not the first suggestion of a stranger with a saw.
